Day 12: Our woman on the ground…

Denise Lai contacted another agency today:

Laurent Meillier. P.G.
Engineering Geologist
Enforcement Section
Groundwater Protection and Waste Containment Division
San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board
1515 Clay St. Suite 1400
Oakland, CA 94612

Laurent is following up to investigate the potential impact on water quality.

I contacted the Water Board today; they are interested in helping us but do not know whether they were called out to the fire and whether they have an incident report. They were called out to the fire in Oakland yesterday to assess contamination to surface and bay waters (if they weren’t called out by our AFD, man that’s gonna be bad!).  I am waiting to hear back from my contact there, Laurent, on this.

In the meantime, Laurent has asked for our help documenting what we are seeing.

PLEASE DOCUMENT THE LOCATION OF AND PHOTOGRAPH THE SOOT-MATERIAL FROM THE FIRE THAT YOU SEE IN THE FOLLOWING LOCATIONS:

Street gutters
Standing water anywhere
Bay surface water
Material sunk to the floor in the bay
Material aggregated along the shorelines, against boats, etc.
Material coming out of your home’s gutter downspouts
AND EMAIL BOTH TO:

Laurent at:  lmeillier at waterboards.ca.gov (replace at with @)

So, to help the Ground water protection folks help us, I went on a little scavenger hunt near the marina where I live. I didn’t find anything, so I walked toward the fire site, which is less than 1/4 away from where I live. Here are some images of what I found.

What is that little red truck in the foreground?

Is that little red fire truck against the white fence?

are those asbestos fibers in there?

What is this stuff? Not wood debris.

Notice the white plastic fence around it.

Keep those cards and letters coming.  We’ll get to the bottom of this.
